Dental Care for your Child

Teeth start developing when the child is in the womb. Most of the babies start growing their teeth by third & sixth months of pregnancy, while some may develop quicker or quieter than usual.

At the birth of a child, a set of 20 primary teeth is already grown & are hidden within the gums called Primary teeth, milk teeth or baby teeth. Generally, at about sixth month of your child’s age, the first tooth erupts. ‘Eruption’ indicates coming out of the tooth through gums. For babies usually it is called as ‘teething’.

What do you expect on your child’s first visit to the dentist?

Your child’s first dental visit is as valuable as his first steps or the words he speaks. At our clinic, your child’s teeth and gums will be checked for any signs of tooth decay or other problems, on the contrary, we evaluate whether the facial bones and teeth are developing correctly. If we are not sure about the development, X-rays may be taken for evolution. Your kid’s teeth will be cleaned and his oral habits, like thumb-sucking, should be evaluated.

How to engage with your little one when you visit Dental Care Dental Clinic?

It is very important, that parents should talk about the first visit in a positive way with their kids. Do not explain to them the dental visits are as punishments. Also, never let anybody tell scary stories about dentist to your child.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kids Dentistry

How to clean child's teeth and gums?

Good oral hygiene must begin before your kids first tooth erupt. You can use a moist, clean washcloth or a soft toothbrush to clean baby’s gums after feedings. As your child’s teeth erupt, begin brushing twice a day with toothpaste contains fluoride with an age-appropriate toothbrush. A ‘smear’ of toothpaste is recommended for children who are less than two years old, while for children between two to five years old, a ‘pea-sized’ amount of toothpaste is advised. Also, flossing regularly will help to clean areas that cannot be reached by a toothbrush. Most importantly, encourage your kid to brush and floss as soon as he able to do it on his own.

Are milk teeth Important?

Milk teeth or baby teeth play an essential role in your child’s overall development. Healthy and properly aligned teeth are necessary for decent nutrition, speech, and self-esteem of your child. Without normal teeth eruption, your kid might ay have difficulty speaking clearly. Milk teeth secure space in the jaw for the permanent teeth. Teeth present next to space created by missing tooth may overstep into this space resulting in establishing wrong positions by erupting permanent teeth.

Will my child have tooth decay from milk and other baby food?

“Early Childhood Caries” or “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay” is associated with prolonged duration of bottle-feeding among kids. Placing a child to have a nap with milk bottles, juice or baby food can commence to tooth decay. Also, giving your kid sweetened liquid food over a long period of time enable decay forming bacteria on the sensitive tooth surfaces. This doubles the chances for dental caries.

How to use fluoridated toothpaste?

But remember too much fluoride containing tooth paste may lead to fluorosis. White spots may develop & cause staining the tooth surface. So, ensure your child to spit out toothpaste after brushing is done.

Is thumb-sucking harmful for kids?

Thumb-sucking is a common habit among kids. It is a spontaneous urge for babies to relieve themselves whenever they feel hungry, anxious or sleepy. It is necessary to stop this thumb-sucking habit since the permanent teeth erupt. This habit not only triggers the problems related to chewing & swallowing, but also it may cause teeth to grow out of their position.

How often should I take my child to dentist?

We prefer your child should be scheduled for checkups once in every six months depending on your kid’s personal oral health.
